Black(and Dodger Blue)Wednesday

Dodgers lose Wills, Moon, then ballgame to Phils, 9-2

LOS ANGELES(AP)-It was a Hollywood premiere with all the trimmings, then the premiere was upstaged by rare Dodger bad luck, turning into a "Black Wednesday" in Dodger-land.

Hollywood native takes mound
Frank Sullivan, acquired from the Red Sox in the off-season by Philadelphia and a native of Hollywood, took the mound and whatever nerves he may have had quickly subsided when he struck out Maury Wills, but what may have been nerves turned into gloom and despair for the Coliseum faithful when Wills pulled his hamstring when exiting the batter's box, thus ending his evening and for that matter, the next 7 Dodgers games. Sullivan had a otherwise successful Phillie debut from that moment forward, pitching 7-2/3 innings, striking out 4, including key strikeouts in the middle of Dodger rallies in the 5th and 8th. All in all, a successful "Hollywood debut" as the tall, lanky right-hander registered a 9-2 Phillie win over the hapless Dodgers and Johnny Podres.

Game notes
-The Dodgers also lost Wally Moon to a wrist injury in the 6th, he will miss the next 6 games.
-Tony Gonzalez followed up his 2 home runs in the opener with 2 doubles in 3 at-bats and 2 RBI's.
-The Phils put the game away with a 4-run 9th inning, sending 10 men to the plate.
-Tony Taylor and Pancho Herrera also drove in 2 runs apiece.
-Darryl Spencer replaced Wills at short and ended up 1-for-3 with a RBI, but also committed a error that started a 2-run Phillies 3rd.

Was Fang There?

The defending World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates made their 1961 TV debut on 4-28-61 against the eventual NL champs for the year, Cincinnati. Before I decide whether to do at least a partial replay, here are some ads as they may have sounded that night on Pitt TV, keeping in mind that I'm not a Pitt TV expert, just one who happens to read Post-Gazette's from the Google archives. 5 Outs Away...

Drysdale fires 1-hitter at Giants Bailey breaks up no-hit bid in 8th Baseball in 1961 Staff LOS ANGELES-5 outs away. That's how Don Drysdale came close to baseball immortality at the Coliseum tonight, losing a no-hit bid on a double by Ed Bailey with one out in the 8th. Drysdale would finish with a one-hitter, striking out 8 as the Dodgers finished a two-game series sweep of the Giants, 2-0. The Dodgers supplemented Drysdale's gem with a Charlie Neal solo homer in the 3rd off Jack Sanford and a sacrifice fly by Norm Larker in the 6th off Jim Duffalo. This was the second 1-hit effort in the early season, the other came on opening day when Dick Donovan of the Senators carried a no-hitter into the 8th against the White Sox.
