Another Dodgers-Pirates donnybrook

Dodgers overcome another sluggish 1st inning, pound Pirates, 11-6
Drysdale settles down after 1st, Fairly a real "4-flusher"

LOS ANGELES, Apr 15(AP)-Lately, there's been something about the 1st inning. One night after the Pirates and Dodgers pulled off a marathon 1st inning, they did it again with the Pirates jumping on Don Drysdale for 5 runs, then the Dodgers jumped Pirate starter Bob Friend for 4 runs. Unlike last night, Drysdale and the Dodgers wore down the Pirates, who won last night's opener in 14 exhausting innings, but finally ran out of steam at the Coliseum, by a final count of 11-6.

Drysdale eventually wears them down
After Sandy Koufax got bedeviled by walks in last night's 1st, it was hits that nearly did in Drysdale, helpless to watch as the Pirates batted around to the tune of 5 runs on 6 hits, with triples by Roberto Clemente and Dick Schofield highlighting the inning. Dodger fans had reason to be concerned with a lackluster 1st inning for the second night in a row by the starting pitcher, but there was a bright side to that otherwise ugly inning, Drysdale struck out 2. From there, he limited Pirate participation at the plate with 2 strikeouts an inning through the first four, ending up with 10. On the other hand, the Dodgers just kept hitting away.

4 again in the first, 10 by the 4th
Like last night, the Dodger bats exploded in the 1st, starting with a leadoff triple by Willie Davis, Tommy Davis then doubled him home, who in turn was singled home by Ron Fairly, starting out a monster night at the plate for him. Duke Snider then homered, virtually a replay of last night's 1st when the Dodgers recorded 4 before an out was made. Bob Friend would survive the rocky 1st, but 5 straight Dodger hits in the 2nd, with 2 more runs scored, signaled the end of the night for Friend. Al McBean took over in the 3rd and the Dodgers almost chased him out with a 3-run third, compliments of Fairly's 2nd home run of the season. The Dodgers got a sac fly from John Roseboro in the 4th, giving the Dodgers 10 runs through 4.

Four-flushing Fairly
Fairly's night went like this, RBI single, run scored in the 1st, single, run scored in the 2nd, 3-run homer in the 3rd, walk in the 5th, single, run scored in the 8th. 4-4, 4 RBI's, 4 runs scored.

How Drysdale finished
Bill Virdon walked to open the Pirate 9th, then advanced to 3rd on a single by Dick Groat. After Bob Skinner fouled out to catcher, Rocky Nelson singled home Virdon with Groat stopping at 2nd. With his lead cut to 11-6, Drysdale was determined to finish this one and finish it he did, getting Clemente to fly to center and Dick Hoak for his 10th strikeout of the night, ending another wild night at the Coliseum.

Did not play due to injury; Mazeroski, Wills, Moon.
