A total of 11 home runs were hit on 4/13/1961 on this American League day, starting off with the "C & C Wrecking Company of Detroit."
Tigers thump Tribe for 2nd in a row
Rocky Colavito and Norm Cash socked 2-run homers as the Tigers turned that early start into a 2nd win in a row over the Indians, 6-1. Colavito and Cash's early dingers were sandwiched around another 2-run bomb from starting pitcher and winner Frank Lary and were never headed from the 4th inning on. Willie Kirkland spoiled Lary's complete game win with a solo shot in the 7th.
Injury report: Both Steve Boros and Dick Brown(Tigers) left the game with minor injuries and should be ready for their next game.
White Sox sock Sens
JC Martin and Jim Landis in the 5th and Roy Sievers and Al Smith in the 6th all went back-to-back with their home runs, as the White Sox sent the upstart Senators back to reality with a 5-1 triumph, avoiding a 3-game sweep in the Nation's Capital. Juan Pizarro scattered 5 hits en route to a complete game victory.
Twins, Yankees in another thriller
A 3-run 11th inning uprising off Luis Arroyo and 2 other Yankee relievers staked the Twins to their 1st win as a Twin Cities franchise, 8-5 at Yankee Stadium. The score was tied 2-2 in the 7th when poor Yankee fielding produced a Twins run; Bill Tuttle reached 1st when Yogi Berra dropped a pop and after a sacrifice, scored when Mickey Mantle butchered a Zolio Versalles fly ball. 2 more Twin runs score in the 8th after 2 were out, Earl Battey singled, then came across on Ted Lepcio's homer.
The Yanks would get to Twins starter Camilio Pascual(9 strikeouts) in the bottom half when Berra led off with a walk and scored on Mantle's HR. The Yankees then chased Pascual with singles by Roger Maris and Tony Kubek, followed by a walk to Clete Boyer, loading the bases. Pinch-hitter Johnny Blanchard's sac fly scored Maris, tying the score at 5. The Yanks would load the bases on walks in the bottom of the 9th, but Moose Skowron grounded into an inning-ending DP, forcing extras.
The Twins got a one-out double from Lepcio in the 11th, then after a groundout, got a walk from Versalles and a clutch triple from Lenny Green(his 2nd of the game) to break the deadlock. Harmon Killebrew then doubled home Green. The Yanks could only muster a 2-out single from Mantle off Opening Day starter Pedro Ramos and that was the ballgame, with Ray Moore overcoming the 9th inning jam for the win.
Red Sox double up A's
The Red Sox turned 4 double plays and got a 2-run homer from Pete Runnels and a 2-run double from Gary Geiger to sweep the 2-game series from Kansas City, 4-2. Gene Conley outdueled Norm Bass and got 2 innings of relief work from Mike Fornieles to preserve the triumph.
