A unique "4-hitter"

Battey's 2nd home run insures DH sweep for Twins
Twins win 2nd on only 4 hits

BALTIMORE, Apr 16(AP)-It'll go down in Oriole lore as a combined 4-hitter. Unfortunately for the Birds, they all left the yard.

Earl Battey's 2nd home run of the game in the 9th inning gave the Minnesota Twins a wild and wooly 7-6 win in game 2 of today's double-header at Memorial Stadium after the Orioles had scored 3 times in the bottom of the 8th to take a 6-5 lead. Jim Lemon's lead-off homer off Milt Pappas tied the score at 6, then one out later, Battey, who had homered in the 7th, sent Pappas's fastball sailing in the early Maryland evening, giving the Twins the lead and the eventual win after winning pitcher Ray Moore got Jim Gentile to foul out to Battey, ending the game and the double-header, which the Twins swept, scoring a 6-1 victory in the opening game.

Orioles score 3 in 8th off Ramos, Moore
The Twins entered the bottom of the 8th in game 2 with a 5-3 lead on homers by Battey and Pedro Ramos, who had hit a grand slam off Pappas in the top of the 2nd, aided by Pappas's wildness as he had walked the bases loaded. Ramos opened the bottom of the 8th by getting Brooks Robinson to ground to 2nd. Jim Gentile then doubled for the 2nd time in the game and promptly scored on Charley Lau's single, cutting the lead to 5-4. Shortstop Ron Hansen then struck out, followed by a double by Whitey Herzog. moving Lau to 3rd. Ray Moore took over for Ramos and gave up a 2-run triple by Jerry Adair, who had homered in the 7th. Pappas struck out to end the inning, but the longball would kill him in the 9th, sending the Birds to a double loss and the Twins heading to Boston with their first 2 wins since moving from Washington.

The defending World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates made their 1961 TV debut on 4-28-61 against the eventual NL champs for the year, Cincinnati. Before I decide whether to do at least a partial replay, here are some ads as they may have sounded that night on Pitt TV, keeping in mind that I'm not a Pitt TV expert, just one who happens to read Post-Gazette's from the Google archives. 5 Outs Away...

Drysdale fires 1-hitter at Giants Bailey breaks up no-hit bid in 8th Baseball in 1961 Staff LOS ANGELES-5 outs away. That's how Don Drysdale came close to baseball immortality at the Coliseum tonight, losing a no-hit bid on a double by Ed Bailey with one out in the 8th. Drysdale would finish with a one-hitter, striking out 8 as the Dodgers finished a two-game series sweep of the Giants, 2-0. The Dodgers supplemented Drysdale's gem with a Charlie Neal solo homer in the 3rd off Jack Sanford and a sacrifice fly by Norm Larker in the 6th off Jim Duffalo. This was the second 1-hit effort in the early season, the other came on opening day when Dick Donovan of the Senators carried a no-hitter into the 8th against the White Sox.
