The trouble with a recreation like this(1961 MLB season), is you're not really satisfied, so you start over at opening day in DC with JFK throwing out the first pitch and everything else a mere recreation. On Wednesday night, I tried it again and I think this time we may be able to make it to the end of opening week.
Sens blank Sox, 2-0
After JFK's opening pitch, Dick Donovan threw quality pitches that surely would've merited the President's Seal and Coot Veal and Gene Woodling knocked in the game's only runs as Donovan outdueled Early Wynn in front of a festive crowd.
Angels debut "heavenly"
Ted Kluszewski's 2-run single sparked a 4-run ninth as the newly christened Angels clipped some Oriole wings in Baltimore, 5-1. Leon Wagner provided the first Angel run with a home run in the 4th, while Jim Gentile matched that in the bottom half. Eli Grba pitched 7-1/3 strong innings for the win over Milt Pappas.
Yankees win thriller from Twins
In a remarkable back-and-forth thriller at the Bronx, the Yanks' Luis Arroyo provided the go-ahead run with a double in the 6th and had to watch Jim Coates bail him out in the 9th as the Yankees beat the Twins by a 7-6 count. Yogi Berra and Roger Maris provided home runs for the Bombers, while the teams played back-and-forth with the lead starting in the 5th. The Twins scored twice in the top of the 5th to tie at 4. then the Yanks regained the lead on Maris' HR. The Twins retied in the top of the 6th, then the Yanks chased starter Pedro Ramos with that decisive 2-run 6th. Arroyo had control trouble in the 8th, walking 3, including the run that provided the final margin. Coates then struck out Bill Tuttle(4 hits) and Billy Martin in the 9th with the tying run at 1st in waning daylight to secure the Yankee win.
Tigers scalp Tribe behind Bunning
Jim Bunning took a shutout into the 9th, but a late home run by Woodie Held cut the Tiger lead in half. Terry Fox then shook off a 1-out single to save the Tigers 4-2 triumph over the Indians. Norm Cash and Jake Wood supplied the homers, while Dick Brown's 2-run single in the 8th provided the final margin of victory.
Red Sox all A's
Bill Monbouquette outdueled Jim Archer with 9th-inning relief help from Mike Fornieles in a 2-1 Fenway Park triumph. Gary Geiger tripled and doubled and scored a Sox run.
